Art, this is Science. Science, this is Art.

Science is an intriguing, hard-to-grasp subject.
I've finished 2 weeks of a crash course to earn a general science credential, and IT'S REALLY HARD! My newfound respect for Science teachers is great. So much information to absorb (that's scientific, yes?) in very little time.

Anyways, the attached video inspired me to study up. Wind generated Strandbeests....imagine sitting on a beach (science), catching the rays (science), listening to the waves crash (science), and this stealthy, kinetic (science) sculpture approaches you??? Leonardo da Vinci would be so impressed. This kind of interaction of Art and Science keeps me motivated to pass the CSET exam.

Imagine what the world would look like if Science teachers had to earn an Art credential!

Can you think of other things that exemplify the merging of Art and Science?
Your reaction (science, again!)?

Friday the 13th

Are you superstitious? My lucky number is 6 and I don't know why...so, double 6 is 12 and this is 2012, so I think it's going to be a lucky year. Hopefully.
Can an Art teacher be an effective science teacher?  I'm enrolled in a special program (read: someone gave a hefty grant) to help RIF (reduction in force) teachers obtain either a secondary math or science single subject credential...FREE!  I'm struggling with understanding Physics and feeling overwhelmed with Biology vocabulary in 5 hour marathon classes where several of us have bonded over the crash course offerings.  I sit in class thinking, if I wanted to teach science, I would have done so. Next week, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, and Methods classes.  I just love teaching Art even more :) Enjoy the weekend!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to you and yours! Have you already broken your resolutions for 2012?  Well, I'm going to rationalize my already broken ones with this thought: New Year's Day was Sunday, sort of celebrated on Monday, which threw me off until Tuesday (today).  As long as you start sometime, right?  Here's a new pair of earrings to start off the year.  Hope you like them!

GLUE, GLORIOUS GLUE

I awoke at the obscene hour of @5:15 a.m. thinking about GLUE.  In my arsenal, there are at least 20 different kinds of adhesive.  As a scrapbooker of many years, I've accumulated photo safe, acid free, repositional, permanent, sticker makers, glue dots, scrappy glue, tape runners, etc.  If I had a nickel for every glue stick I own...as an Art Teacher, glue sticks come in handy; they're easy to use, store compactly, and don't make a gooey mess on tabletops.  I have a friend, also an Art Teacher, who swears by them.  Personally, I have never mastered the technique of keeping the glue off of my fingers.  Some middle-schoolers like to throw opened glue sticks up to the ceiling to see if they stick.  They do...

There are many kinds of glue that I like alot.  Lately, I've been using glass finish-like glue, sort of an epoxy resin, to make my scrappy pins and earrings.  There are many brands available, and I keep going back to FolkArt's "Papier" and Ranger's "Glossy Accents".

Glue storage: I have dedicated drawer space for all of them.

These are some adhesives I can't live without: Scrappy Glue (Magic Scraps), 2 Way Glue (Zig Memeory System), Photo Mounts (Pioneer Photo Albums), 3D squares and circles (I found some at the 99 cent store!), Super Tacky Tape (a pinkish roll), Mono Adhesive (Tombo), and adhesive sheets (any kind).  Every scrapbooker has their own sticky preferences.  My advice?  Buy the ones you love to use on sale, in bulk, and with coupons while you can because you never know when they will be discontinued by the manufacturer.

What's your favorite glue???

Happy Hanukkah!

Tonight is Hanukkah eve, one of the most favorite nights in our house.  After I finish making these tags for my favorite sister, Joyce, I am off to the market for latke supplies.  I want to thank my friends and relatives for helping me launch my Etsy shop and blog, and for their unwaivering support.  Happy Hanukkah, chag sameach!

School's out for now

Now that school is out for winter break, I can scrapcraft (I think I just coined a new word) whenever!  I've been making mixed media jewelry out of vintagey papers and you can see the earrings at my Etsy shop.  They are real conversation pieces, very lightweight, with lots of sparkle.  Hope you like them!
